Live Longer, Healthier with more Oxygen! TOP 5 Indoor Plants Must-Have!
Hola! It has been a really long while since I last wrote. Wow! Geez! Dang!
Okay guys, I know the title sounds a lil bit cliche. But hey, it got you here.
As a mother (I don't know why I have to mention that), and as a person who always stays up late at night, there were moments where I felt the air inside the house gets a bit stuffy. I usually let my windows to stay open so I can let the air flows well, but hubby doesn't really like it. He always says that the air during the night time is worse than day time which is not good for daughter. You know, the embun and all. Deep inside I beg to differ, but being a good wifey myself (ahemm), I listened and kept the windows shut. I did open them at times though, when hubby's not looking. Hush!
So back to the topic. Well, you probably might have read this somewhere too, but I assure you that there are exactly certain kinds of house plants that can help you generate oxygen (all plants do, duh). I meant, the kind that doesn't really need much care. Oh yass! I have enough things on my hands; hubby, daughter, house chores, work, work and another work. As much as I too, want to spend my precious time talking and caressing plants that won't ever talk to me, I'm just not blessed with that luxury. So what do I need?
- Plants that don't talk
- Plants that don't kill my cat
- Plants that has 'muscles'
- Plants that is independent
- Plants that needs occasional watering
- Plants that can survive with very little to no sunlight
- Plants that I can suck all its benefits
- Plants that live to generate oxygen
Tadaaa...
#1 - ALOE VERA

Poor thing Ms Aloe you are my #1. Taking care of you is sweat-less. I only pour you a drink whenever I accidentally remember you. But you grew big and bulky so please stay on my side for a really long time.
I have a medium pot of aloe which I got from mom in law since 2017. It was tiny back then and I placed it at the balcony. Initially, I was excited and committed watering it everyday, but then I was suddenly bombarded with works and totally forgot about this poor missy. 2 weeks gone by, and when I stepped out to the balcony, I saw it dying!! Took a jug of water and pour all at once. Guess what, 2 days later, it got back to be aloe-ve!
Important Note: Keep it out of reach from children and pets.

#2 - SNAKE PLANT

I once got a cheap joke - "Woooo, snake plant? You're not scared of snake?" WTF right? I know.
I told you some plants have muscles. They're un-killable. I don't place it together with my aloe though, on a contrary, I have them in a few small pots and put it scattered around the house; next to the TV, on my desk, in the bedroom, kitchen and on the bookshelves. I used IKEA small flowerpot because, well, who doesn't. I do feel the air gets cleaner once the whole batch arrived at my place. Occasional watering, dry place and very little sunlight. It's weird, I love it.
Owh, but if you have a little toddler at home and you like the plant to be in a big pot placed on the floor, I highly don't recommend it. It's bad for babies, tods and pets, IF they touched it. Poisonous. I'm not trying to scare you, it's poisonous.
Chill. Read the benefits of this plant here.
#3 - SUCCULENTS & CACTI (read - Cactus)

Oh my, aren't they tiny little gorgeous things???
If you know where to find, you can get a baby pot of succulents for as low as only RM2. Even McD is expensive than this. Eh?
I have to admit I don't know any specific names of succulents but here's some info for you; Jade Plant, Echeveria, Zebra Plant, Panda Plant, Cactus and Aloe Vera (hello, aloe vera is also a kind of succulent).
Bonus point, feel free to place them anywhere you like and they'll survive! Pretty, cute and petite. Require the very-lah minimal care and also occasional watering. Thick leaves, different kind of shapes. Cheap! What more do you want? Get a dozen now!
More of their benefits here and here.
#4 - WATER PLANT

It should be my #1, but since it only looks pretty in the bathroom (to me at least), I placed it at #4. LOL.
Been to the hotel bathroom? Restroom? Yes, this is the plant. Water plants. No sunlight, no pot. Woohoo!
Water plants can thrive in shades well because they can root well in water. But don't get me wrong, they're not aquatic. Still best planted in soil (if you rajin).
While I have all the above-mentioned plants all over in my house to help me clear the air, I'm not forgetting my bathrooms. I have 2 bathrooms with 2 pots in each one. I don't plant them in soil, I just merely place the root in a jar full of fresh water. Maybe it's psychology, but I do feel the freshness of the air with this plant around. You can put more if you want to.
I take a quick peek every morning to check the leaves though. Just pluck those that gets brown so it won't contaminate the other. Wallah, new leaves will grow back in just matter of days. And remember to check the water too. Replace it with fresh water once a week will do just fine.

#5 - RUBBER PLANT

Here comes my last but not least favorite plant number 5.
If you're a Scandi lover, you might already have this at home. I love its leaves but the size doesn't really fit in my house.
In case you didn't know, this plant symbolizes abundance, contentment, good fortune and wealth. This is why you can easily found it almost anywhere inside an office or even a building, because it can also grow well under artificial lights. Not to mention with its big, round leaves that you can instantly feel the oxygen floating around you. Imagine a big portion of carbon dioxide replaced with oxygen in double time. But the best part of all, a pot of this plant can reduce the bacteria and mold in your home at almost 50% - 60%. Imagine if you have 2.
Knowing more of its benefits could help you. Check it out here.
There you go, my TOP 5 list of best indoor plants. If you don't have neither of them at home, I urge you to have one. If you're not doing it for yourself, at least do it for our dear planet Earth.
And remember, every breath you take is a blessing :)
Till next time.
